The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Gill Commodore’s Cup
Under the motto "Serious Fun", once a year St. Maarten turns into a meeting point for professional sailors and sailing enthusiasts from around the world.
Divided into several boat classes, the crews fight for the win in multiple races over one weekend. This
prestigious event takes place since 1980 and includes parties which today are considered as being legendary. The races take participants around the entire island, and the event traditionally ends with a big party and an award ceremony at Kim Sha Beach, accompanied by international music acts and Grammy stars. Even days later, the vibrant energy can still be felt among participants and visitors. The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is a true legend! And those who dare, may even charter a boat and become a part of this legend.
General framework
Just like many other sailing events, the St. Maarten Regatta started as a fun competition among friends, and in 1980 it was first recognized as an official regatta with 12 boats. Whether the audience and the participants at the event simply liked the beer of the Dutch brewer Heineken, that's a fact that is not known. However, in 1983, the Dutch beer brewer Heineken joined the event as the official title sponsor and turned the St. Maarten Regatta into the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, which gave the event worldwide fame.
Today, the race takes place every year over 3 full days on the first weekend in March, and as an international sailing event it attracts over 200 boats and about 2,500 crew members from over 35 countries, plus thousands of spectators from all over the world. A rising trend! Thus, the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta is the largest and most important regatta in the entire Caribbean.
The attractiveness of the event is enhanced by the excellent framework conditions: an impressive venue, plenty of sunshine with warm temperatures, beaches with crystal-clear water, generally good wind patterns, bikinis, spectacular parties, Caribbean food and of course, ice cold Heineken beer. The Sint Maarten Yacht Club Regatta Foundation takes care of a smooth operation, and the sponsor Heineken creates a pleasant ambience.
The Regatta
The competition is open to all types of boats, from small Beach Catamarans to luxury 'gunboats', trimarans and former Volvo boats. With your own boat or with one of the nearly 70 available charter boats – thanks to the rather low participation fee, anyone has the opportunity to participate in the regatta. This gives you the opportunity to compete against professional teams and to put your skills to the test at a high level.
The single race stages of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta are determined shortly before the start, depending on weather conditions, and take the participants along almost all coastal areas of the friendly island of St. Maarten/Saint-Martin:
Anguilla Channel, Marigot Bay, Philipsburg, and even all the way around the island.
Day 1 - Around the island
Usually, the big race around the island takes place on the first day. It begins in the south, at Simpson Bay, and takes the participants clockwise along the island, past Tintamarre in the north, and then back to the south to finish in Simpson Bay.
In 2016, the following Around the Island records were set:
In the category Multihull, the team with the green trimaran "Phaedo3" circled the island in 1 hour, 19 minutes and 59 seconds.
In the category Monohull, the "Highland Fling XI” sailed around the island with a best time of 2 hours, 12 minutes and 32 seconds.
Day 2
On the second day, the racing takes place on both sides of the island with all starts and finishes in Simpson Bay.
Day 3
On the third and last day, one last race is scheduled with the grand finish in Simpson Bay.
The parties
During the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, things really get rocking on the island of St. Maarten. In addition to the 4 professional sailing days, 4 nights of the most legendary parties in the Caribbean take place with a variety of first-class musical entertainment. Every night, unique locations host local music groups for concerts featuring all kinds of musical styles: Calypso, Reggae, Zouk, Soca, Steel Pan and pop music. And the scent of Caribbean food, pretty girls and ice-cold Heineken beer offer the 10,000 - 12,000 participants and visitors on Kim Sha Beach and up to 20,000 throughout the event an unforgettable experience. However, no matter how the races end: When it comes to partying, the Dutch lead the way. Every year, the Dutch brewer Heineken organizes the spectacular main event and award ceremony for the entire island at Kim Sha Beach in Simpson Bay and invites international music stars and American Grammy winners to St. Maarten. The event already hosted many superstars, such as: Akon, Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, The Commodores, Red Foo, The Black Eyed Peas, The Wailers and Kool & the Gang.
The music talents that sing and play in bars, clubs and discos are already worth the trip. One thing is guaranteed, sailor or non-sailor; your experience will be one to never forget!

Die St. Maarten Heineken Regatta
Der Wettbewerb ist offen für alle Bootstypen vom kleinen Beach Cat-Katamaran bis zum großen „Gunboat“ und Trimaranen. Mit dem eigenen Boot oder den fast 70 verfügbaren Charterbooten und niedrigen Teilnahmegebühren kann sich jeder die Chance sichern, an der Regatta teilzunehmen. Damit besteht die Gelegenheit, gegen professionelle Teams anzutreten und das eigene Können auf hohem Niveau zu beweisen.
Die einzelnen Rennabschnitte der St. Maarten Heineken Regatta werden je nach Wetterbedingungen kurzfristig vor dem Start festgelegt und führen die Teilnehmer an fast allen Küstenabschnitten der freundlichen Insel St. Maarten/Saint-Martin entlang: Anguilla Kanal, Marigot Bay, Philipsburg und auch einmal um die Insel herum.
Tag 1
In der Regel findet am ersten Tag das große Rennen um die Insel statt. Begonnen wird im Süden in der Simpson Bay im Uhrzeigersinn entlang der Insel, vorbei im Norden an Tintamarre, bis man zum Schluss wieder die Simpson Bay erreicht.

In der Kategorie Multihull (Mehrrumpfboote) umrundete das Team mit dem grünen Trimaran „Phaedo3“ die Insel in 1 Stunde 19 Minuten und 59 Sekunden.
In der Kategorie Monohull (Einrumpfboote) umsegelte die „Highland Fling XI“ mit einer Bestzeit von 2 Stunden 12 Minuten 32 Sekunden die Insel.
Tag 2
Am zweiten Tag findet das Rennen auf der Westseite der Insel von der Simpson Bay zur französischen Hauptstadt Marigot in Saint-Martin statt.
Tag 3
Am dritten und letzten Tag endet das Rennen mit dem großen Finale in der Simpson Bay.
Der Gill Commodore’s Cup
Am Vortag zur St. Maarten Heineken Regatta stimmen kleinere Events auf die Regatta ein. Zum Einstimmen geht der St. Maarten Heineken Regatta seit 2005 der Gill Commodore’s Cup voraus. Dieser Wettbewerb ist ein eigenständiges Rennen und war traditionell nur für die Spinnaker-Klasse ausgelegt. Er ist aber aufgrund der Beliebtheit seit 2015 für alle Bootsklassen außer der Lottery Class offen und dient für die meisten Teilnehmer als Testlauf für den großen Wettkampf.
Die Partys
An den Tagen der St. Maarten Heineken Regatta brennt die Luft auf und um die Insel St. Maarten. Zusätzlich zu den 4 professionellen Segeltagen finden an 4 Nächten überall auf der Insel die legendärsten Partys in der Karibik mit musikalischer Unterhaltung der Extraklasse statt. In jeder dieser Nächte und an einzigartigen Locations, heizen einheimische Musikgruppen in Konzerten die Luft mit aller Art von musikalischen Richtungen an: von Calypso bis Reggae, Zouk bis Soca und Steel Pan bis Pop. Und der Geruch von karibischem Essen, hübsche Mädchen und eiskaltes Heineken Bier bescheren den bis zu 20.000 Teilnehmern und Besuchern ein unvergessliches Event. Aber egal, wie der Wettkampf ausgeht: Bei den Partys haben auf jeden Fall die Niederländer die Nase vorn. Die niederländische Brauerei Heineken lässt es sich nicht nehmen, jedes Jahr in der Simpson Bay am Kim Sha Beach zur spektakulären Hauptveranstaltung mit Preiskrönung internationale Musik-Stars und amerikanische Grammy-Gewinner nach St. Maarten zu holen und die ganze Insel dazu einzuladen. Schon mit dabei waren Musikschwergewichte wie: Akon, Shaggy, Wyclef Jean, The Commodores, Red Foo, The Black Eyed Peas, The Wailers und Kool & the Gang.
